We are currently undertaking an initiative to donate a total of 2,000 volumes of English-translated Japanese manga to the C. V. Starr East Asian Library at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) in the United States. The C. V. Starr East Asian Library is one of the largest East Asian research libraries in the United States and ranks second nationwide in its collection of Japanese-language materials. This initiative began in the spring of 2025, with 1,000 volumes already donated, leading to the establishment of a new manga collection shelf titled “Manga in Translation.” The remaining 1,000 volumes are scheduled to be donated by the summer of 2026.■Background of the Manga DonationGuided by our mission, “Every manga, in every language,” we are committed to promoting manga culture, primarily in North America. However, in the Bay Area, opportunities to easily access translated Japanese manga remain limited. As the C. V. Starr East Asian Library is a specialized library dedicated to East Asian language materials, its manga-related holdings prior to this initiative consisted mainly of Japanese-language works, with no English-language editions of Japanese manga (except for a small number of bilingual publications). As a result, accepting English-translated Japanese manga at this scale is considered a rare occurrence in the library’s history.Japanese manga is a cultural medium with the power to move people across borders. By delivering these works to UC Berkeley, a world-class international academic institution, this initiative not only promotes cultural exchange but also creates opportunities for the next generation of students to encounter and engage with Japanese culture.■Manga Collection Lineup▼ View the full catalog of the manga collection here:The donated titles were carefully selected and procured directly by our team, resulting in a diverse collection that spans a wide range of genres and publication eras—from historically significant classics to contemporary works.https://search.library.berkeley.edu/discovery/search?query=lds28,contains,Manga%20in%20Translation%20Collection,AND&tab=Default_UCLibrarySearch&search_scope=DN_and_CI&vid=01UCS_BER:UCB&mode=advanced&offset=0This donation project goes beyond simply providing books; it represents an effort to sustainably expand manga culture originating in Japan to the global stage. By engaging students and researchers—audiences with strong influence and dissemination power—we hope that appreciation for manga will spread from local communities to the entire United States and ultimately throughout the world. We will continue to promote environments in which Japanese manga can be widely read worldwide and remain committed to contributing to the advancement of cultural exchange.
